fee

Moooolah, an international principle?

The English fee is related to the German vieh, cattle, just as the Latin pecunia, money, is related to their pecus, cattle/sheep/flock/etc.

School comes through the Latin schola from the Greek schola, both of which mean leisure.

I think this is hilarious, but for some reason when I told this to my med-school-student spouse, she didn’t laugh.

My guess is that when the word originated only privileged children of the noblemen were able to sit around and learn instead of slave around at a manual labor trade. Just a hunch.
